EST : Centralstation, Darmstadt/Germany, 12th May 2004

Posted in EST, Esbjoern Svensson on June 16, 2008 by urge2burge

Esbjoern Svensson : Acoustic piano
Don Berglund : Acoustic bass
Magnus Oestroem : Drums

It is with a heavy heart that I post this show from the incomparable EST as it serves as this blog’s tribute to the wonderful piano player and all round great guy, Esbjoern Svensson who died shortly before midnight on saturday from injuries he sustained while scuba diving near Stockholm. The impact Esbjoern and EST had went far beyond the borders of jazz music and they managed that most difficult of tasks for Europeans jazz players ; they were a serious draw in the United States. Esbjoern was 44 years old.

John Scofield Trio With Horns : Domicil, Dortmund, Germany, 29th November 2007

John Scofield, g
Steve Swallow, b
Bill Stewart, dr
Phil Grenadier, tp
Eddie Salkin, ts
Frank Vacin, bars, bcl

This is a seriously good show from the band John toured last year. I really liked “This Meets That” I have to say and this show is a great extra for any of you who liked the album too. Scof’s guitar has rarely sounded quite this good and it’s beautiful recording too.

Vincent Herring Quartet : Jazzkeller, Frankfurt 17.10.2005 (first set)

Posted in Vincent Herring on June 14, 2008 by urge2burge

Vincent Herring : Alto saxophone

Anthony Wonsey : Acoustic piano

Richie Goods : Acoustic bass

Joris Dodli : Drums

This excellent set comes to us from the original taper Tobias Jakobi and a pretty great job he’s made of it too. Turns out he’s a mean sax player himself and you can check him out here www.myspace.com/tobiasjakobimusic

This is  a great free wheeling set from a guy I was sure was going to recieve a lot more acclaim than he has. I first heard him on his album “American Experience” which I thought was fantastic and then he showed up in London playing great alto with Nat Adderly’s Quintet. Since then he’s been flying under the radar a little and I don’t know why, as you’ll hear on this recording he’s a monster!

Jim Hall Trio : Murnau, Germany, 14.10.2007

Posted in Geoff Keezer, Jim Hall, Scott Colley on June 9, 2008 by urge2burge

Jim Hall : Guitar

Scott Colley : Acoustic bass

Geoff Keezer : Acoustic piano

I’m sure you all love Jim Hall’s playing as much as I do and you certainly don’t need me to sell his playing to you so let’s just say that this is a beautifully recorded set from last year which features the maestro alongside two exception and totally compatable musicians.

Jerry Bergonzi Quartet : Jazz Bar, Edinburgh 17.11.2005

Posted in Jerry Bergonzi with tags on June 9, 2008 by urge2burge

Jerry Bergonzi : Tenor saxophone

Renato Chicco : Acoustic piano

Dave Santoro : Acoustic bass

Andrea Michelutti : Drums

This session arrived here at urge2burge Towers from the original taper who is in addition to being a huge Gonz fan, a wonderful tenor and alto player. Gordon McNeil is his name and if you get the chance to check him out, I’d highly recommend it. He’d just finished a week at this club with the ex Blakey trumpet player Valerie Ponomarev when Jerry came thru and I think his MD recording is pretty cool. If you don’t already have it you should check out “Tenor Talk” which is a recording of this very quartet and  even by the high standard of Gonz CD’s it’s is a real beaut!

John McLaughlin Trio : Gothenburg 1.11.1992

Posted in John McLaughlin, Trilok Gurtu on June 9, 2008 by urge2burge

John McLaughlin : Guitars

Dominique DiPiazza : Electric bass

Trilok Gurtu : Percussion

I can still clearly remember the feelings I had when I first heard John McLaughlin play trio which was in, I think 1989 at the Festival Hall on the South Bank in London. That night was released as a CD and which I’ve listened to hundreds of times since but that night was very special for me. One of those incredible nights!

This is a slightly different version of John’s trio and is another wonderful document of this quality group. This is indeed from Gothenburg, the tags were miss labelled in a moment of madness. Don’t wporry…the people responsible have been fired and will not work in the business again.
