Christine Jensen : Saxophone

Ingrid Jensen, Jocelyn Couture, Bill Mahar, Dave Mossing and Andrew King : Trumpet

David Grott, Jean Nicholas Trottier, David Martin and Bob Ellis : Trombone

Donny Kennedy and Eric Hove : Alto saxophone and flute

Chet Doxas and Sean Craig : Tenor saxophone and clarinet

Joel Miller : Tenor and soprano saxophones and clarinet

Ken Bibace : Electric guitar

Steve Amirault : Acoustic piano

Fraser Hollins : Acoustic bass

Martin Auguste : Drums

Montreal has always had a fantastic jazz scene and here’s a recent show that proves it. A wonderful jazz orchestra under the guidance of Christine Jensen and featuring her sister Ingrid on trumpet, brought to us by the excellent CBC radio. I’m sending this out to Kim who just went toe to toe with the great Kenny Wheeler and more than lived to tell the tale.

Chris Potter : Tenor saxophone and bass clarinet

Jonathan Kreisberg : Electric guitar

Matt Penman : Acoustic bass

Following on from what I reckon is a great set from the Dave Douglas band this is a superb set from four more of the very finest players on the scene at the moment. Is there any  chance that this isn’t the future of our music? This comes from the incredible archive of shows from this wonderful jazz club. Check out the treasure trove here   http://www.smallsjazzclub.com

Thanks to the BBC for putting out this great show from one of the most important bands of the time. Beautifully recorded, it’s a wonderful extra to go with your Dave Douglas CD’s and everyone plays great. Special mention for me goes to Donny McCaslin who never fails to knock me out.

Tom Kennedy : Electric bass

Peter Erskine : Drums

One of the very best line ups of Mainieri’s pace setting band this is a great show from the ‘Magnetic Fields’ tour. Erskine and Kennedy make a truly wonderful rhythm and Warren Bernhardt’s keys are just about perfect.

Jim Beard Group : Stockholm 30.10.1999

Jim Beard : Keyboards

Bob Malach : Tenor saxophone

Jon Herington : Guitars

Matthew Garrison : Electric bass

Gene Lake : Drums

Arto Tuncboyaciyan : Percussion

This is an extraordinary group led by one of the very finest keyboard players of the last 40 years. Jim Beard’s played with an absolute “who’s who” of modern music but has only led groups of his own on the odd occasion so this live show is a great chance to hear him right to the fore. Over at Bogards Jazz Tapes there’s another show from this tour and if you haven’t already grabbed it, I’d get over there right away.

Tremendous session recorded once again by WBGO and available to stream on the NPR site. Featuring alongside the  excellent piano of the leader the wonderful Mark Turner, back from his awful injury and sounding, if possible even better than ever.
