McCoy Tyner Quartet : Yoshi’s, Oakland 28.12.2006 (late set)
McCoy Tyner : Piano
Joe Lovano : Tenor saxophone
Christian McBride : Acoustic bass
Jeff “Tain” Watts : Drums
I guess this is kind of a partner to the recent “Steps” post as it features a band who recorded a live CD on the same week long gig. This again is an audience recording but the quality is pretty good and everyone plays a storm. If you don’t already have it, the commercial CD release is a stonker too. I can’t remember enjoying Joe Lovano so much.
As always, right click the files to save them.

thanks for this. an incredible band. I missed the shows, unfortunately, but the Half Note disc is fantastic. got it around christmas time and have been listening ever since. Nice to hear some more music from their stay. I love most all of Lovano’s stuff , not to mention the incredible Tain and McBride. I have been listening the past week or so to the other McCoy post you have from Vienna in 96 with Brecker. Great show that is – thanks for the great stuff.

I don’t think this is Christian. Check the review at

the review link is for the following year – the same stay as the half note disc Tyner released last year. McCoy has a 2 week residency at yoshis near the end/beginning of most years (though not this past year). the bootleg posted here is from Jan 2006 and the half note disc and the review are from his next stay, Dec 2006.

Jeff – thanks for the tip. What a great way to end each year.
Doesn’t the title say December, though? Do you have information that it’s actually from January?
Also, the song titles in the review line up perfectly. I’m SURE McCoy plays Fly With The Wind and Passion Dance and Mellow Tone all the time. But the order and “second set” identification make that seem less likely.
Any ideas?

gorecrow – my bad, you’re right. it does say december. huh, I must have totally invented that. I downloaded it, made a cover, printed it out and for some reason wrote january all over it. no idea why – age, insanity, stupidity . . . who knows.

no problem, jeff. I’ve got enough insanity and stupidity for both of us. And I’m working on the age as fast as I can.
you make covers for live shows? very nice.

other than the curious editing on this (oh man, the cut right as Tain is going OFF on track 2 kills me everytime – but, as a long time bootlegger, I have countless tapes of this sort of thing), this is one hell of a show. it seems to me that both Lovano and Tain are having a better – or at least a more hyper – night than the released disc. I love the released one, it’s just that here it seems Lovano is really stretching it – and tain is playing that crazy soloing while keeping the beat that I love, but he does it a ton here. great stuff. thank you.
