Wayne Shorter Quintet : The Blue Note, Tokyo 9.3.1996

wayne_shorter

Wayne Shorter : Tenor and soprano saxophones

Jim Beard : Keyboards

David Gilmour : Electric guitar

Alphonso Johnson : Electric bass

Rodney Holmes : Drums

This is a beautifully recorded set from Japanese radio of Wayne’s mid 90’s group which I remember being blown away by at a San Francisco jazz festival the year or two before this date. Jim Beard’s a personal favourite of mine ; check out the superb live set of Jim’s band over at http://bogardjazz.blogspot.com/  or get hold of excellent  ‘Song of the Sun’ if don’t know this wonderful keyboard player. I hadn’t heard David Gilmour before he turned up in Wayne’s band but I’ve been a fan ever since and he quite definately rips it up here.

Wayne’s wife Ana Maria and their niece Dalila were both killed on TWA flight 800 on July 17, 1996

…one more MissSpeling: It’s not David Gilmour but David Gilmore – I’m a fan of both of them, but anyway…
Thanks a lot for this post!!!

  2. Yes, David Gilmore.
I was in Nice this year, for the festival, and I saw Wayne and this 5tet… what a gret evening with the guys!
    Rodney & David were incredibles.
